In a Pakistani hostel, the first décor question is not colour, theme or frame size. It is whether the residence permits anything on its walls.
Rules differ by institution. The University of Sargodha lists pasted posters and wall-chalking among disciplinary violations. Its Hall Council page also requires prior written approval for notices placed on walls or doors. Riphah International University Faisalabad’s current policy makes residents responsible for damage or alteration to hostel property. The University of Turbat’s 2023 hostel rules tell residents to avoid painting or hammering nails for notices, posters and banners. A method accepted in a friend’s room proves nothing about yours.
Read the written rule, ask the warden about the exact display method, and keep the reply. Only then does artwork choice become useful.
Read the exact restriction
“No nails” and “no posters” are different rules. One restricts a fixing method. The other restricts the display itself. A third hostel might require written approval for both.
The current University of Sargodha hostel regulations show why a generic renter tip is insufficient: removable tape still leaves a poster on the wall, even without a nail. “Removable” describes a product claim, not permission from the residence.
Place your rule into one of these four positions before ordering:
- Wall displays are prohibited
- Leave the wall untouched. If personal objects are permitted on assigned furniture, use a small framed print on a deep desk or stable shelf. Keep it clear of doors, curtains, bags and sleeping areas. No stable surface means no framed display.
- Written approval is required
- Send the artwork dimensions, finished weight, intended location and proposed fixing method. A broad question such as “Is room décor allowed?” leaves too much unresolved.
- Nails are prohibited, while other methods are not addressed
- Treat silence as unresolved. Ask whether the residence approves a named removable picture-hanging system on the room’s painted surface. After approval, use the surface-first guide to hanging art without nails to check load, surface and release risk.
- A permanent fixing is approved
- Record the approved wall and method, then plan the finished framed object rather than the print alone. Overhead positions deserve stricter installation judgment; move the display away from a bed if the fixing, wall or installer is uncertain.
Measure only the space assigned to you
A bare section of wall is not automatically available. A roommate’s bed, cupboard door, window curtain, switchboard or study light might cross it during normal use. Start with the part of the room under your control.
Record five limits: clear width, clear height, nearest moving door, nearest bed edge and the main seated viewing position. If wall display has approval, compare those numbers with the complete framed dimensions. The WallCult size guide separates print labels from finished frame size; the outer frame is the object the room must hold.
If the approved area is narrow or crowded, resist shrinking several unrelated images into it. One measured piece produces one boundary, one fixing decision and one object to pack. The separate guide to wall art for small rooms covers visual scale; hostel permission still comes first.
Choose one interest the room already supports
A hostel room carries books, bedding, bags, chargers and another person’s belongings. Wall art works better when it introduces one clear subject instead of repeating every colour and hobby already present.
Start from an interest with staying power. WallCult’s current catalogue has dedicated collections for anime wall art, gaming wall art, memes and culture and Pakistani art. Pick the subject before comparing sizes. A trend bought for one semester still needs storage, transport and a permitted display position afterward.
Shared rooms add a second filter. Agree on the wall section, subject, brightness and placement before payment. The roommate does not need to share the interest, but the piece should stay outside their bed area, storage route and study sightline.
Buy for move-out as well as move-in
Hostel art travels more often than art in a settled home. Room changes, semester breaks and intercity trips put the frame through repeated handling. A larger piece brings a larger carton, wider corner protection and more awkward transport through stairs, buses or cars.
Keep the original protective material and note the finished dimensions. Before travel, follow the layer-by-layer packing method for framed wall art. Do not press wrapping material directly against the visible surface or pack a frame while damp.
Permission also belongs in the budget. The WallCult price guide shows current PKR options, but the lowest listed size is still wasted money if the hostel rejects the display. WallCult’s FAQ says change-of-mind returns are not offered for made-to-order pieces, so resolve the rule before placing the order.
