“Diptych, A2” is not a complete wall-art specification. It tells you there are two parts and gives you a size, but it may not tell you whether A2 applies to each panel, whether the two images connect, or how wide the finished display will be.
A diptych has two panels. A triptych has three. Before comparing designs or prices in PKR, turn the product listing into one line that describes the complete order.
Build the order line before comparing prices
A useful order line looks like this: 2 coordinated panels | 16.5 × 23.4 inches each | finished frame size | 2-inch gap | 35-inch installed width.
Five fields make that line reliable:
- Piece count
- How many separate panels or frames arrive in the parcel?
- Size basis
- Does the selected size apply to each panel or to the complete artwork?
- Image relationship
- Is one image split across the panels, are the images coordinated, or are they independent?
- Finished dimensions
- Do the measurements include the visible frame, or only the printed area?
- Installed width
- What will the full group measure after the gaps are added?
The title alone rarely supplies all five. Current Pakistani retailers use labels including “set of 3,” “3 panels,” and “3 panel art – 3 piece split frame” on Frameworld, Orner, and Mozters. Each label establishes a quantity. The rest of the listing has to establish what that quantity means.
Panel count and image relationship are separate fields
In its basic sense, a diptych is a work made in two parts, while a triptych is a work made in three parts. The parts are intended to be read together. A two-piece bundle is not automatically a diptych, and three frames sharing a product page are not necessarily a triptych.
A split image sends one scene across every panel. A horizon, figure, line or colour field may cross the gaps. Panel order is fixed, rotation is usually not possible, and changing the spacing can interrupt the composition.
A coordinated set gives each panel a complete image while connecting the pieces through palette, subject or visual rhythm. The gaps have more flexibility, although removing one panel may upset the planned balance.
An independent frame pack groups separate works under one product. The pieces may share a frame finish but can often change order, move to different walls or accept new neighbours later. That is closer to a small gallery set than one multi-panel artwork.
WallCult’s Allah and Muhammad calligraphy diptych is explicitly a coordinated pair. Both portrait panels use the same corner structure, line work and colour placement, and one order contains both pieces. The artwork does not rely on a single line crossing the centre gap.
A size label may describe one panel or the whole set
“16.5 × 23.4 inches” could mean that every panel is A2, or it could describe the overall artwork before division. Those purchases occupy very different walls.
WallCult states the diptych size per panel. If each of its two panels is A2 portrait, the artwork contributes 33 inches of width before the centre gap. A 2-inch gap makes the basic installed span 35 inches. If the quoted dimensions exclude visible frame edges, add those too.
Installed width = all panel widths added together + all gaps.
A triptych with three equal 12-inch-wide panels and two 2-inch gaps occupies 40 inches: 12 + 12 + 12 + 2 + 2. For unequal panels, add their individual widths rather than multiplying one number.
Use the seller’s finished outer dimensions whenever possible. That avoids counting the frame twice. If you are still choosing scale, compare the complete result with WallCult’s wall art size guide, not a single panel in isolation.
The image relationship controls the gaps
For one image split across several panels, begin with the seller’s intended order and spacing. Keep the top or centre line consistent, then check the picture from normal viewing distance. Even a small gap can cut awkwardly through a face, curve or horizon.
Coordinated but self-contained panels allow more adjustment around a switchboard, doorway or narrow wall section. Independent packs offer the most freedom, but they still need a visible rule—such as a shared frame finish, baseline or colour family—to avoid looking accidental. WallCult’s guide to matching and mixed picture frames explains how to choose that rule.
Paper templates show the complete span before any holes are made. Mark each template with its panel position as well as its width. For a continuous image, that prevents the left, centre and right pieces from being swapped. The gallery wall layout guide covers template placement; the masonry hanging guide covers fixings for common concrete and brick walls.
Approve the complete object, not the product thumbnail
Room mockups can show the intended relationship between panels, but they are not measurements. Ask the seller to confirm any missing field in writing, including whether all panels, frames and hanging fittings are included at the displayed price.
Then write the order line beside the listing: “2 coordinated panels × 16.5 inches + 2-inch gap = 35 inches installed.” The set now has a defined wall requirement, a comparable price basis and a clear expected piece count.
